Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Postpartum Doula?
The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves."
A postpartum doula provides evidence-based information on things such as infant feeding; whether it be breast, bottle, or a combination of both, pumping, emotional and physical recovery from birth, mother-baby bonding, infant soothing, and basic newborn care.
A postpartum doula can also help care for the new baby at night so parents can get more rest and help with light housework. A postpartum doula is there to help new families in the first days, weeks, or months after bringing home a new baby. Research shows moms, dads, and babies have an easier time with this transition and are less likely to experience postpartum mood disorders if a good support team is in place.
Other terms people use for a postpartum doula are night nanny, night nurse, and baby nurse.
