Her expertise provides support and guidance to new mothers and families navigating the joys and challenges of parenthood. Other terms people have used when they think of a "postpartum doula" are night nanny, night nurse, and baby nurse.
The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves."
A postpartum doula provides evidence-based information on things such as infant feeding; whether it be breast, bottle, or a combination of both, pumping, emotional and physical recovery from birth, mother-baby bonding, infant soothing, and basic newborn care.
A postpartum doula can also help care for the new baby at night so parents can get more rest and help with light housework. Research shows moms, dads, and babies have an easier time with this transition and are less likely to experience postpartum mood disorders if a good support team is in place.
